Image Correction Master Class-For Lightroom 4&5

My good friend George Jardine has been making exceptional instructional videos for quite a while.  Now George has launched a new one called The Image Correction Master Class-For Lightroom 4&5.  OK, so he used one of my stock production photographs (above) for the series, and yes he is a friend.  But if you are looking for extremely detailed yet highly understandable information, George’s videos are simply the best.  Heck, I even learned a few subtleties in watching the series.

Highly recommended, as are the rest of his DVD’s!

New fine art nude photography from Joshua Tree

Fine art nude photo by photographer Allen Birnbach

Last week I taught a fine art nude workshop near Joshua Tree, California.  A wonderful group of talented photographers came in from across the country and from Europe and Canada to attend.  It was a great time!

Since I never shoot for myself during a workshop and only focus on the participants, I always arrive a day early to shoot for myself.  And I offer participants the opportunity to observe how I approach my photography.  I call it “Watch Me Work,” and this time a photographer from Luxembourg shadowed me for the day.

This is just one of many images I was pleased to produce with a wonderfully talented dancer.  To see more images, and read a bit about my process, head over to the blog at NudePhotoWorkshops.com.

I’ll be posting more in the days to come.

Working with strong features: an afternoon of fine art nude photography

Whenever I start working with someone for the first time, I begin with what I call “survey.”  I simply have them stand facing the camera and shoot them full length, then have them rotate slowly clockwise and shoot at various intervals until they complete the circle.

I was intrigued by the shape of this woman’s nose, and decided to make an image that celebrated the wonderful profile she has.  The fun as playing with the sharp lines of her forearm and nose in contrast with the rounded shape of her breasts and back.

To read more about how I came to make this image, and evolved it into something else, take at look at the blog at NudePhotoWorkshops.com, where I share tips for shooting fine art nude photography.  And while you are there, take a look at the fine art nude photography workshops and opportunities for private instruction in fine art nude photography.

Juror for fine art nude photography show at The Darkroom Gallery

This past week, I served as juror for a fine art nude photography exhibit at The Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont.  There were 543 entries, and it took three days to cull the work down to the final selection.

My first impression as I did my quick overview was the breadth of styles in the submissions.  And the high level of technique brought to bear in the images.  There were elegant color digital photographs, wet plate black and white photography, and composited images created in Photoshop.  The result was several extended editing sessions poring over the concepts and great craft participants exhibited in their work.  In the end it was difficult to narrow the field down to a cohesive show, and I felt honored to have been involved in the judging.

Notable was what was not included.  Interesting diptychs, tributes to Kertesz, Erwitt, Mondrian and Japanese printmaking, wonderful self-portraits and playful juxtaposition of the figure in unique environments.  In the end, many well-conceived images were not included because they fell short in composition or technique but the creative process behind the work was truly impressive.

Because there were so many strong images, I did not feel comfortable picking a Juror’s Choice.  I felt the content and skill level of many of the photographs were on par with each other, and picking one would only be a reflection of my personal taste. The images reproduced here are the five Honorable Mentions that I felt were the best examples of the breadth of the marvelous fine art nude photography that was submitted.  The full exhibit is at The Darkroom Gallery Skin Exhibit.

Tip for shooting fine art nude photographs: It’s all about the light

fine art nude photography tip from Allen Birnbach

Well, maybe not exactly, but on location or in the studio, light is a key ingredient in whether a fine art nude image works or not.  My wife sometimes comments on how I seem to be off in space somewhere, but the reality is that when that happens, I’m most likely taking in some unusual light and looking for something to shoot with it.  Fortunately, she is also in the arts, so she understands.  Anyway, my point is that as photographers we need to ever hone our skills at observing light, and understanding how to use it to best advantage.  Here’s one example.

My studio is in an old school, so there are huge windows throughout the building.  I was certainly attracted to the space I ended up renting because of the three large windows in the studio itself.  But I was equally intrigued by the light in the hallways and staircases.  The window light in such tight spaces is magical.   That’s  because the apparent contrast is lessened the closer the light is to a subject.  So if a model is close to the window, the light wraps around her with a sense of direction but without harshness.

In this case, I decided to make an image about light.  I placed the model in a spot where she would be surrounded by darkness to create tension between the large windows and her highlighted figure.  How the model occupies the space, and her size within the frame became important in creating a sense of balance and movement within the photograph, so we tried several variations of her position before arriving at this final frame.

Whatever you are doing, pay attention to the light.  And even if you can’t shoot something at that specific moment, catalog it in your memory so you can either go back at another time, or recognize a similar situation when you come upon it with your camera.

Fine art nude photography lighting in studio

I always enjoy the opportunity to photograph bodybuilders in the nude.  The definition in their musculature creates wonderful possibilities when it comes to using artificial light to create dramatic studies.  This series was created with a single umbrella to the right of the model, shot on a Canon 5D Mk III, 1/160 @ƒ22,  ISO 200.

It’s winter here in Colorado, so it’s back inside to shoot fine art nude photographs in the studio.  I often like to start a first session with a model by just getting acquainted with their form- looking from front, back, high and low. Change focal length to see what effect that may have on their features.

In this case, what I was attracted to was the almost iridescent quality of the the model’s skin color, and the wonderful sense of design and movement we could illicit through gesture.  What a fun afternoon!

black and white nude photograph by fine art photographer Allen Birnbach

As in a lot of places, the weather has been unusual in Colorado.  Here, it has been unusually warm, so to my great surprise I was able to shoot photo images of one of my favorite models a couple of weeks ago.

Many years ago, my work as a landscape photographer with a great love for black and white photography evolved to a desire to incorporate the human element in my work.  Many of the early black and white images in the Defining Eden series focused on a small nude model in a large landscape.  The reason for that was to speak to the spiritual connection of the human to the natural world.

Currently I find it interesting to also speak to emotion and gesture in a more intimate way.  So focusing closer in on the nude figure in my black and white photographs has been a wonderful source of joy. The shift in emphasis so that the landscape takes a back seat to the model is an exhilarating exploration.   This day’s work was a delight, and this my favorite image.

This past week was PhotoPlus Expo, the largest photography conference in the U.S.  A wonderful opportunity to see the latest in cameras, grip equipment and software.

I was fortunate to have a number of my images displayed at the Pentax booth, all created with the Pentax 645D medium format camera, and delighted by the way they were displayed.

I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the amazing choreographer and dancer Andrew Skeels on the Emergence series. Andrew is wonderful  to work with because as a choreographer he can evolve an idea into incredible movement.  This is just one of the images we made that day, and more will be coming online soon.
